Isaac Steele

Isaac Steele (2-0 pro 5-0 am) is one of The Matthew Wellington Group’s clients training and fighting out of the The Jorge Gurgel MMA and Fitness Academy.

Having wrestled in college, Steele initially began training MMA to stay in shape during the wrestling offseason.

I started training during my Junior year of high school just to keep in shape for wrestling. My older brother Adam wrestled at The Ohio State University and when he stopped wrestling he picked up MMA and before I knew it I was in the gym helping him almost every day. After a long history of setbacks in the sports that I did and wanted to pursue in College (wrestling being the main one), MMA took over and I fell in love with the sport. I met new coaches and new training partners (mainly collegiate wrestlers) and I just knew after my first fight I wanted to get better and be the best I could be in this sport.

Loyal to his roots, Steele continues to adapt his wrestling skills to MMA under the tutelage of his wrestling coach, Adam Disabato. For MMA, Steel refines his skills with Jorge Gurgel’s team in West Chester, Ohio.

I have been training there on and off since April of 2010 and I am now training here full time. I train at the JGMMA Academy because of the environment and the skill level of the gym and martial artists here. We have such great coaches and training partners here and everyone is willing to help anyone. Everyone I have trained and spoken to is very respectful and they all have a passion for what they do. Notable coaches and fighters such as Rich Franklin, Dustin Hazelett, Jorge Gurgel, and Jon Stutzman are just such great people and motivators and they are extremely knowledgeable athletes. JGMMA is by far the best gym around Ohio and I believe one of the top gyms in the nation with the talent level and coaching the gym provides.

As an amateur, Steele held the Ultimate Victory Challenge welterweight title from November 2009 until March 2011 when he vacated it. In addition to the success that Steele has found in his MMA career, he also holds an associate’s degree in law enforcement from Ohio University. For the moment, Steele is choosing to focus on his MMA career, and will make his professional debut in the second half of 2011.
