Fighting out of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Chad Corvin (6-0) is the newest edition to the UFC’s heavyweight division. Prior to his signing with the UFC, Corvin fought for the Warrior MMA promotion as well as the Florida-based Xtreme Fighting Championships where he posted a devastating 19 second KO of Rico Hattingh, one of South Africa’s top MMA fighters.
Corvin’s route to MMA did not start like a lot of other fighters.
After school we’d box. We had sixteen ounce gloves, go out in the parking lot and go at it. I started there, and knocked a guy out, and we started going to parties on the weekends and I’d always have my boxing gloves with me. I started to make a name for myself and was spotted by a local matchmaker who gave me a chance to fight in a show. I won, and it was a rush, exciting and nerve-wracking, and he asked me if I wanted to do it again because when I fought, the fans went wild and I gave them what they wanted.
Currently training out Elizabethtown Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo under the tutelage of Josh Johnson, and working out at Energy Sports and Fitness in Elizabethtown, Corvin sports a solid wrestling background, but is best known for his crushing striking power. None of his professional fights have gone past the second minute of the first round.
An avid hunter and fisher, outside of the cage, Corvin makes a living as a plumber. When I first met Corvin, we spoke after his match with Scott Barrett and he told me he was going to take some time off from MMA to focus on getting his journeyman’s license, which he successfully obtained to become a fully licensed residential and commercial plumber.
Corvin is a no-nonsense man, in and out of the cage.
I’ve worked hard for what I’ve got and I’m going to keep on working.
It is this mentality that has led him to a successful career in the cage and a newly signed contract with the world’s premier MMA promotion, the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Corvin will make his debut on May 8, 2010 at UFC 113: Machida vs. Shogun 2, where he will face Joey Beltran.
